Free cloud storage , October 2024 review

Free cloud storage plans ranked by feature on each tab, table with all features at the end for side-to-side comparison.

1.-Mega Free - 50 GB *
What's the catch ? Bandwidth is severely limited overall (upload/download) *, on average ~ 1 GB every 6 hours. So forget about uploading/downloading files larger than 1 GB and large files in general. It will take you on average 12.5 days to upload 50 GB (4 GB per day) and another 12.5 days to download 50 GB, so plan is useful only for small files and limited traffic.

2.-Google Drive - 15 GB *
What's the catch ? Space is shared with two other Google services: GMail and Google Photos *. If you make heavy use of storage with Gmail or Google Photos you may not have much free space left for Google Drive.

3.-PCloud Basic - 10 GB *, upgradable to 20 GB; 1 GB for each friend invite and other actions like completing profile *.
What's the catch ? Bandwidth is limited to 50 GB of download traffic per month *, fairly easy to surpass download limit with a few large files or popular small files, so plan is only useful for limited traffic.

4.-Box Individual - 10 GB *
What's the catch ? Bandwidth is limited to 10 GB of download traffic per month *. So extremely easy to surpass download limit with a few files -- which are also limited to a maximum 250 MB per file * -- so plan is useful only for very limited traffic with small files.

5.-Sync Starter - 5 GB *, upgradable with 1 GB for each friend invite * and other actions like completing profile *.
What's the catch ? Nothing, although free storage is among the lowest of all free providers. Bandwidth is unlimited *.

6.-Microsoft OneDrive - 5 GB *
What's the catch ? Nothing, although free storage is among the lowest of all free providers. Bandwidth is unlimited.
Notable mention: With the purchase of Office 365, OneDrive gets 1 TB (1024 MB) of storage *. So if you're a heavy Office user (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) with the purchase of Office 365 OneDrive gets 200 times the space.

7.-Apple iCloud - 5 GB *
What's the catch ? Nothing, although it should be obvious this provider targets certain 'brand' and OS devices, even though there's a Windows application to access it. Bandwidth is unlimited.

8.-Dropbox Basic - 2 GB *, upgradable to 19 GB; 500 MB for each friend invite and other actions like completing profile *.
What's the catch ? Bandwidth limited to 20 GB a day *, while bandwidth is generous compared to other free plans, don't expect service if one of your files goes viral on social media. Useful if you don't plan on sharing large files or files with more than a couple of dozen users.

Notable mention - Amazon Drive - 5 GB and unlimited photos.
What's the catch ? When you purchase an Amazon prime membership, you also get 5 GB of cloud storage for videos, music and any other type of file, as well as unlimited storage for photos. If you're interested in other Amazon services (e.g. free two-day shipping, free access to select movies, TV shows, music & ebooks) then a prime membership can be a good deal that includes this free cloud storage.
